Source: ORL. The increasing incidence of oropharyngeal cancers has led the medical scientific world to look for new etiologies, in addition to the traditional ones alcohol and tobacco consumption. Thus, it has been shown that the human papillomavirus HPV brings changes in the human DNA that affect the cell cycle, leading to an aberrant proliferation of tumor cells by altering the production of p53 and p16 proteins.

A statistical processing of the obtained data was performed, which allowed the evaluation of the degree of involvement of HPV infection in the prognosis of these cases and in the choice of treatment.
The results of the study were consistent with those published in the literature, and the extraction of HPV DNA from the tumor should change the treatment plan for oropharyngeal SCC. The development of new national oncological guidelines related to this pathology would lead to an improvement in the survival rate and the quality of life of patients.
